Drop-in Sessions

Drop-in sessions enable you to speak to a Career Development Adviser for 15-20 minutes. You do not need an appointment - you can call in any at the following times, Monday to Thursday.

Drop-in enables you to raise quick queries and obtain information and guidance. If more in-depth guidance is required than the Career Development Adviser might suggest booking a longer appointment. All Drop-in sessions are confidential and the Career Development Adviser will agree with you what issues you want to discuss.

Your Drop-in discussion may involve:

  • Starting to explore your career/postgraduate study options - e.g. by having an initial discussion of your preferences and interests, skills, strengths, and career ideas
  • Suggestions about how to explore career or study ideas in more depth including referring you on to other activities and workshops provided within the CDC
  • Talking about and reflecting upon your course
  • Feedback and advice about CVs, covering letters, application forms, interviews and assessment centres including ways to improve your applications
  • Explaining different job hunting techniques and ways of finding work experience

If Drop-in sounds like a good starting point for your career enquiry then please just call in.

Graduates of other universities can use the service up to one year after graduation. To check full eligibility click here. Alternatively, Students, staff and graduates may wish to use our email advice service.

Careers Guidance Appointment

Careers Guidance Appointments enable you to speak to a Career Development Adviser for 30-45 minutes. There is no set format but an appointment may be appropriate because you wish to start exploring career ideas or discuss a career issue in depth.

All Careers Guidance Appointments are confidential and your discussion will reflect the nature of your career enquiry. At the start the Career Development Adviser will agree with you what issues you want to discuss and might suggest that you return for follow-up discussion(s).

Your Careers Guidance Appointment may involve:

  • Encouraging you to reflect on your skills, preferences, strengths, weaknesses, values, priorities and career or study ideas
  • Working with you to identify career or study ideas for further investigation
  • Exploring factors to consider in your career development. For example, this might involve discussion of employer expectations and selection criteria, or the academic requirements and funding opportunities for a postgraduate course you are interested in
  • Developing an action plan that will help you achieve your career goals over the short, medium or long term
  • Enhancing your strategies for making applications, interviews and assessment centres

A Careers Guidance Appointment can be made for you after speaking to a member of staff.
